How a Floral Design Class Teaches You to See Flowers Differently

How a Floral Design Class Teaches You to See Flowers Differently

Viola Flower School didn’t start with a business plan. It started with a question.

Friends would stop by the studio, watch us work, and linger. A customer picking up her arrangement would pause at the workbench, curious about how the colors came together.

“Could you show me how to do that?” became the thing we heard most often.

So we opened a table. Then another. And Viola Flower School grew from there.

If you’ve been searching for floral design classes near me, here’s what you’re walking into with us. It’s not a lecture. It’s not a polished production. It’s a room full of flowers, a few good tools, and a team that genuinely loves this work showing you how it comes together.

Learn Floral Design at Viola Flower School

Our floral design classes happen at the Viola Floral studio on Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica. It’s the same space where we design arrangements for clients, where the cooler is full of garden roses and ranunculus and whatever the season is offering that week.

That matters. You’re not learning in a rented venue or a conference room with a folding table. You’re learning in a working floral studio, surrounded by the same flowers and tools we use every day. The energy is different. You can feel it when you walk in.

Classes are hands-on from the first minute. We set your table with seasonal blooms, greenery, vessels, and everything you need. Our designers guide you through the process, but there’s room to follow your instincts. Some of the best arrangements we’ve ever seen in class came from someone who ignored the “rules” and trusted what felt right.

What You’ll Learn in a Floral Design Class

Here’s what we wish every flower lover knew from the start: floral design is not about perfection. It’s about seeing. Learning to notice how a peach garden rose looks next to a burgundy dahlia. How a trailing vine changes the entire shape of an arrangement. How one unexpected stem can make everything feel alive.

In our floral design workshops, you’ll learn how to condition and prepare flowers (this alone will change how long your arrangements last at home). You’ll learn about color. Not theory, but feeling. How warm tones gather and cool tones recede. How to use texture, movement, and negative space so your arrangement breathes instead of just sitting there.

You’ll build something from an empty vessel to a finished piece, and you’ll understand the basics of why it works. That’s the part you carry home with you, long after the flowers are gone.

Who Are These Flower Arranging Classes For?

Everyone who has ever looked at a beautiful arrangement and thought: I wonder how they did that.

Most of our guests have never arranged flowers before. Some are flower lovers who buy stems at the market and want to learn how to put them together with more intention. We’ve had brides planning their wedding, couples looking for a creative evening together, friend groups celebrating a birthday, corporate teams on an offsite, and more than a few people who came alone, just for themselves. That’s one of our favorite things. Someone giving themselves the gift of a creative afternoon.

If you love beautiful things and you’re curious about how they come together, you belong at this table.

Hands-On Floral Design Workshops in Santa Monica

Our studio is in Santa Monica, so if you’re anywhere on the Westside or in the greater Los Angeles area, we’re easy to reach. Guests come regularly from Brentwood, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Pacific Palisades, Venice, Culver City, and Malibu.

The workshop palette changes with the seasons. Right now, in summer, we’re working with dahlias, lisianthus, snapdragons, zinnias, and big, open garden roses in shades of coral and peach. By fall, the palette will shift to burgundy, amber, and sage. That’s part of what makes each class feel like its own experience. You’re designing with whatever the season is giving us, and the season is always generous.

We’d love to have you join us. Explore upcoming floral design classes.

Private Floral Workshops and Group Classes

Some of the most joyful workshops we host are the private ones. There’s something about a room full of people who already love each other, learning something new together. The laughter is louder. The arrangements are bolder. Everyone helps everyone.

We design private floral workshops for birthdays, bridal showers, bachelorette weekends, Mother’s Day gatherings, and friend groups who want something more meaningful than another dinner reservation. Every detail can be customized: the flower palette, the arrangement style, the music, the mood.

If you’re planning something special, reach out to the studio. We’ll build it with you.

Corporate Floral Workshops in Los Angeles

Corporate workshops are one of the things that surprised us most about teaching. You’d expect a room full of colleagues to be a little stiff. It’s the opposite. Something about working with your hands side by side, choosing flowers, asking each other “does this look right?” breaks down the walls that office settings build up.

We’ve hosted corporate floral workshops in the Los Angeles area for team retreats, client appreciation events, wellness programs, and brand collaborations with partners like Dior Beauty and Brunello Cucinelli. Every one of them has ended with people lingering, not wanting to leave.

If your team could use something creative and grounding, we’d love to talk about it.

Why Choose Viola Flower School?

We’re a small studio. That’s intentional. It means our classes stay intimate, our instruction stays personal, and our flowers stay exceptional. You’ll work with the same premium, seasonal blooms we use for our client arrangements. Not bulk flowers from a warehouse. The real thing.

We started Viola Flower School because we believe that working with flowers can shift something in you. Slow you down. Wake up a part of your brain that doesn’t get much attention. Reconnect you to beauty and seasons and the simple act of making something with care.

That’s not something we can promise in a marketing line. But we see it happen in every class.
